Comprehensive investigation of a former petroleum derivatives industry (Badalona)

Project Type: 

Comprehensive project for preliminary and detailed investigation, data update on groundwater quality in pre-existing devices on the site, quantitative risk analysis, and a potential remediation project for future urban development. 

Conceptual Framework: 

  • Former tar and derivative production plant with both aboveground and underground tanks containing various chemicals 
  • Major fuel fire on the site in 1960 
  • Later converted to a glue and adhesive manufacturing facility 
  • Contamination by TPH, PAH, and CHC in two distinct hotspots 
  • Hotspots located in the SE and NE areas 

Actions: 

  • Sampling of groundwater from pre-existing devices 
  • Detailed investigation through installation of 6 piezometers with soil and water sampling 
  • Pumping tests 
  • Subsurface vapor sampling via static extraction 
  • Preparation of an environmental improvement project 
  • Consulting during the site’s purchase-sale process
