Integral decontamination after an emergency at a chemical plant

Project Type: 

  • Cleaning of chemical residues at a distribution and storage facility 
  • Selective excavation of soils in a streambed affected by chemical discharge 
  • Sewer system cleaning following the passage of chemical effluents 

Conceptual Framework: 

  • Chemical storage and distribution facility. Impact caused by a fire that led to the spillage of chemical products over pavement, sewer system, and into a nearby stream. Affected by multiple chemical compounds. 

Decontamination via selective excavation: 

  • Preliminary soil characterization 
  • Determination of soil management routes 
  • Selective excavation 
  • Temporary soil stockpiling 
  • Disposal in Class III landfill 
  • Verification of remaining soils 
  • Backfilling with imported soil 

Objective: 

Cleaning of pavement and sewer network. Selective removal of contaminated soils. 

Results: 

  • Excavation area: 650 m² 

Excavated soil volume: 

  • Class III soils: 178 m³ 
  • C&D waste: 57 m³ 

Managed tonnage: 

▪ Class III: 301 tons 
▪ C&D waste: 107 tons
